The mayor of Beccles is hoping the two car crashes which occurred at the same spot within 24-hours is a “strange coincidence” rather than a sign of a new accident blackspot.
At around 7.45am on Friday, December 21, a two car crash on the A146 near the Morrisons roundabout left one driver trapped in their car.
The trapped driver was freed by a crew from the East of England Ambulance Service but did not require hospital treatment.
Suffolk Police and two fire engines were also on hand to provide assistance and controlling traffic flow as the crash blocked the westbound lane towards Norwich.
The incident caused lengthy delays for morning commuters, with queues reaching as far back as Worlingham.
The crash is the second collision within 24-hours at the spot.
Four vehicles collided on the eastbound side of the A146 near the Morrisons roundabout at 8.10am on Thursday, December 20.
Once again there were no serious injuries and the drivers of the Ford transit van, Honda Civic, Volkswagen Polo and Citroen Dispatch walked away unscathed.
Beccles mayor Elfrede Brambley-Crawshaw said she was surprised by the two rush-hour collisions.
She said: “It’s not something I expect at all, it’s really strange. Hopefully it’s just a really strange coincidence.
“There are areas were people are campaigning for change and are blackspots but it is not one of the areas you think of as an issue.”
She added: “It’s now essential police and highways take a look to make sure the area is as safe as possible.”
Beccles town councillor Caroline Topping was likewise shocked by the crashes which took place on what many consider a safe stretch of road.
She said: “Personally I wouldn’t say that piece of road is dangerous at all.
“I did see on Facebook somebody said there was mud on the road.
“Which would make sense to me as it’s not a particularly dangerous area and the conditions were not what you would expect for a crash – it was not icy or foggy.”
