Three schools entered a competition to design the medals for this year’s Downham Market Games.
Hundreds of designs flooded in which gave the judges a tough job when it came to deciding who would be the winner.
Town councillor Charlie Pyatt and Anwar Ali from The Downham Tandoori joined games volunteers Julie McGee, Sally Gooderson and Hannah Baxter to look through the designs until they reached a unanimous agreement on the winner.
Molly Golding from Denver VC Primary School designed a colourful and energetic centre which gives a sense of togetherness and fun which Mr Pyatt said was what the games were all about.
“We love how the Games tries to get as many people involved as possible and for those children that can’t make the day they have been given a chance to get involved through this brilliant display of art,” he said.
Organiser Frances Rayner had the pleasure of telling Molly in a school assembly that she had won. It was a complete surprise Frances said.
“The school hadn’t told her I was coming in and that I would be awarding her with her design made up in a medal for her to keep,” she added.
“We are very proud of what Molly has designed for us and cannot wait to see it on all the athletics medals that will be handed out this year.”
The Downham Games will be held at the memorial fields, Downham Market on the 10th June.
The athletics competition is £1 for children and £2 for adults to enter and consists of six events – 400m, 200m, javelin and shot putt, standing long and high jump.
There is a mini event for under-eights and this year a new age category has been added 60 years and over.
“We recognise that people are staying fitter longer but there is often a variation in what can be achieved by someone who is 40 years old and someone who is over 60 so we wanted to add a veterans age group to encourage more senior people to take part,” said Mrs Rayner.
