A dog walking scheme will be organised at a meeting today to help reassure and to bring together a community following the murder of Peter Wrighton.

The 83-year-old father and grandfather's body was discovered in woodland near East Harling on Saturday, August 5.

A popular dog walking spot, Norfolk Police and Harling Parish Council are keen for the community to feel they are safe to use the woodland.

It is hoped a dog buddy scheme can be created as not only a tribute to Mr Wrighton, who loved walking his two dogs, but to help create friendships.

Parish council clerk Kate Filby said: 'I think it is a great idea. It is helping people to make friends.

'It is not just for people in East Harling it is open to anybody and for any of the wooded areas around the village.'

She added: 'East Harling is a busy and thriving village full of wonderful groups run by volunteers offering support to the elderly, disabled and lonely along with popular 'Mardles', scout group, Karate and athletics club and much more.

'This new dog walking group will be very well received by East Harling and its neighbouring villages as a new way to enjoy the beautiful woodlands that surround our village whilst making new friends along the way.'

A meeting will be held today at 10am at East Harling Sports and Social club by the police and the parish council to discuss ideas.

Mr Wrighton's family are supporting the event and all are welcome to attend.

Engagement officer PC Amy Lucas said: 'We are aware the murder of Peter had a significant impact on the communities of East Harling and we want to encourage them to continue with their daily business.

'Community spirit is vitally important and we hope, by using one of Peter's loves, the spirit will return.'

She added: 'This is a way for the community to feel safe and take control of a situation where they may have felt powerless.

'Hopefully, this scheme will provide a positive outcome to such a sad crime and the meeting will be well attended.'

Former soldier Alexander Palmer, 23, of Freesia Way, Cringleford, was charged with his murder.

He is due in court on November 17.
