A dog took a train ride from Newmarket to Cambridge this morning after it boarded without its owner.

It is understood the terrier was taken on board after it was found at Newmarket Station by schoolchildren, with the conductor suggesting it could be looked after in Cambridge when no owner could be found.

It was picked up by the Cambridge City Council dog warden on arrival at Cambridge station and is set to be reunited with its owner.

A council employee, Tom Pickover, Tweeted a picture of the dog, saying: 'This dog got on a train in Newmarket & picked up by our dog warden in Cambridge! Owner located & on way for pick up.'

Staff from Greater Anglia, who run the train service, alerted the dog warden and were able to care for it until they arrived.

An Abellio Greater Anglia spokesperson said: 'Our staff at Cambridge were pleased to care for an unexpected four-legged friend this morning when a stray dog was handed in which had been found at Newmarket station, and was brought to Cambridge on the 08.19 arrival.

'We hope the dog can be quickly reunited with its owner now it has been passed into the care of the local dog warden.'
