On Wednesday, May 16, at a full Diss Town Council meeting held in The Corn Hall council chambers, Trevor Wenman was re-elected as mayor of Diss by his fellow councillors.

The only councillor to be put forward for the role, Mr Wenman was unanimously voted in by the council.

Following the vote, he explained his initial shock at being asked to continue as mayor, but that it was a vote of confidence in his ability to be carry out the role and very humbling.

'I have obviously been doing something right, but I'm very happy to learn from my mistakes at this point.' He said

'Thank-you first of all to all of the councillors, including those who have had to leave us, it's been a privilege being your mayor and working as a team with you.

'It's not about what I want to achieve next year it's about the council and what we can achieve together. I have behind me a great team, I have had wonderful support.

'Being mayor is a difficult job, but now I know that my faux pas and slip-ups haven't made people think I'm not right for the job.'

Mr Wenman, who has lived in Diss since 1995, went on to thank three particular members of the council for their support during the previous year. The leaders he had served alongside, Graham Minshull and Julian Mason - who was also re-elected as council leader following the mayoral vote- council marketing and administrative assistant Kimberly Harper-Collins and fellow councillor and his wife, Fiona Wenman.

A semi-retired local government officer, who has been on the council since 2015, Mr Wenman was also previously a councillor between 2005-10, he also works part time in Tesco and is clerk to New Buckenham Parish Council.

Following the council meeting Mr Wenman presented two cheques to his chosen mayoral charities for the closing year, Mind and Tearfund, upon presenting representatives from each organisation with a cheque for £534 he said he had chosen the charities because they both look after 'the people we forget about.'
