The 220 lots to be auction at TW Gaze in Diss on May 30 include rare pieces of military, naval and civilian history dating from the Battle of Waterloo to Queen Elizabeth II.

Notable items include a Life Guard Regiment Waterloo medal (£400-£500) and an 1847 Victoria General Service medal from the Napoleonic Campaigns, with bars for St Sebastian, Vittoria and Vimiera, to a member of the 9th Foot Regiment (£1,200-£1,800)

There are various civilian honours, too, including a Victorian bronze award marvellously entitled Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry for saving a Life at Sea (£250-£300) and a Court Marshall medal group which comes complete with fascinating back-story relating to a member of the Norfolk Regiment (£400-£600).

They are being sold by a local man whose interest stemmed from his own service in the Special Constabulary and the City of London Police, as well as the years he served in the Essex Home Guard during the Second World War.
