A pre-school that was forced to suddenly close after its roof caved in during a rain storm, is celebrating its first half term back in business.

Mattishall Pre-School closed in January, just days into the new term, after rain flooded into the building, damaged walls and floors, caused havoc with the electrics and left toys ruined.

But after an incredible eight months of the committee pleading for funds, labour and materials and a community effort to carry out all the repairs, the doors were able to be reopened to children for the start of the new school year.

There are now 16 children on the school books with more on a waiting list.

Deputy manager Emi Jo Smith said it had been a difficult time for all of them while the facility was closed but they were amazed by the support they received.

'Everyone really pulled together to get the funds and the materials in place for people to do the work,' she said. 'It was a mad rush in the last week to get it all ready, the floor wasn't laid until the Tuesday and we were here late on the Wednesday getting everything laid out for the reopening on the Thursday. There is still a little bit of painting to do but that can wait until half term.'

They were concerned that some parents would find other childcare and not come back to the pre-school but they have been overwhelmed by renewed interest in booking their places.

'Some have siblings at the school so it is convenient for them but others are new which is great,' said Miss Smith. 'The children are really happy to be back.'

Dad Andrew Randall said it was great that the pre-school was now open again for daughter Callie. 'We were never going to send her anywhere else,' he said. 'The building is great, it's a lot brighter and she loves it.'

Supervisor Louise Marrison added: 'The committee and the community did an amazing job and have been hugely supportive. So many people came out of the woodwork to help. It was very important that we opened in September and we are happy to have the kids back.'
