For almost three hours between 3.45 and 6.30pm, a section of the westbound A47 was blocked between Postwick and Trowse after a Renault Captur collided with the rear of an old Routemaster bus.

The driver of the Routemaster bus, Don Grunbaum, said it had been carrying around 54 visitors to Norfolk with the Awayadays sightseeing company.

He said they had been travelling around 35 miles an hour, because the bus was 'designed for London streets, not high speed driving', when he heard a bang.

'At first I thought it was something mechanical or an electrical fault,' he said. 'I pulled over to the side of the road and saw there was a vehicle in the barrier. I went round to the back of the bus and it was stoved in, including the stairway which mean people were trapped upstairs.'

Four fire crews attended, from Carrow, Sprowston, Earlham and Acle and extracted one casualty at the scene. The road reopened at 7pm.

It came after part of the Acle Straight was blocked during the morning when a lorry ended up in a ditch.

The accident happened about two miles out of Great Yarmouth, at 7.20am.A Norfolk Police spokesman said the lorry driver got out of the vehicle unhurt.

The section of the Acle straight, where the accident happened, was closed in both directions for three hours while the lorry was pulled out of the ditch.

Elsewhere in the county, police were called to the A11 after a car lost a tyre because of a pothole.

The highway obstruction happened at Spooner Row, on the northbound carriageway, at 7.30am. Meanwhile, police are appealing for witnesses after a crash on Sunday left a motorist in hospital with serious injuries.

The collision between a black Mercedes Vito van and a blue Citroen Saxo occurred at around 2.50am on the B1146, near Dereham.

The driver of the Citroen Saxo was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
