A power line damaged by a fallen tree has started a fire and caused disruption to more than 1,000 homes.

UK Power Networks engineers are currently working to restore power supplies to 1,052 customers after a tree fell on an overhead electricity line in the Mundford area at around 4pm, according to a spokesman for the company.

A crew from Thetford are dealing with the tree, which started a fire after falling in West Tofts, near the Stanta military training area.

The UK Power Networks spokesman said: 'In order to carry out repairs as quickly and as safely as possible, we isolated supplies to 85 customers at 5.03pm and a further 1,012 at 5.07pm. Power was restored to 45 customers at 5.19pm.

'We appreciate how difficult it can be to lose power and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this incident.'
