Don't panic, don't panic Captain Mainwaring... A museum dedicated to a cult TV sitcom reopens today.

Don’t panic, don’t panic Captain Mainwaring... A museum dedicated to a cult TV sitcom has reopened.

Dad’s Army pulled on their tin helmets and marched across our screens for almost a decade from 1968 - 1977.

Millions laughed at the antics of Capt Mainwaring, Sgt Wilson, Cpl Jones and other members of the Home Guard, as they prepared to repel any invading Germans.

While set in the fictional coastal resort of Walmington-on-Sea much of the action was filmed around Thetford, whose Old Fire Station now houses the nation’s only museum dedicated to the series.

The attraction is now open every Saturday (10am - 3pm) until November 24. It also opens on Tuesdays in July, August and September.

Chairman Stuart Wright said: “We are expecting a busy time during 2018 with our appearance in the London Lord Mayor’s show in November really raising the profile of the museum.

“We already attract many Dad’s Army fans from across the country and from abroad but, with the 50th anniversary celebrations taking place throughout 2018 we expect ourselves to be the centre of attention as media coverage starts to increase.

“In 2008 the museum featured in Jonathan Ross’s 40th anniversary tribute to Dad’s Army and we hope the BBC will look to involve us in some way to mark the 50th anniversary”.

Despite being half as century old, the show’s endearing popularity still draws thousands of visitors to the museum, which first opened in 2007.

Corinne Fulford, who runs the Thetford information centre and also helped set up the museum, said: “It’s one of those things which is a complete mixture of magic. You had brilliant writing, it was set in the past so it doesn’t date and it had a wondferful cast.”

Other Dad’s Army related memoriabilia in Thetford includes a statue of Capt Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe) by the town bridge and Jones the Butcher’s van at the Charles Burrell Museum.

There are also guided tours around a Dad’s Army trail, which takes in locations seen during the series.

The Dad’s Army Museum is at the Old Fire Station in Cage Lane, Thetford. Admission is free.
