A crowd gathered in Diss today as Dad's Army and Eastenders star Ian Lavender opened the town museum for its new season.

Mr Lavender who is one of the original 'Dad's Army' cast members cut the ribbon at the museum in Market Hill at 11am today in front of a crowd of about 40 people.

Mr Lavender said it was a joy to be in Diss and was; 'so proud to opening the museum.'

Describing the collection as diverse, the actor touched on his personal beliefs on the importance of arts education, libraries and museums and how communities should rally around to preserve them.

Exhibitions for the museum's 2017 season include a celebration of the humble letter, the lives of those buried in Diss cemetery and a display on the town's links to one of the greatest love stories of the 20th century, which has recently been made into a major Hollywood film,
