A cyclist suffered serious injuries and a cardiac arrest after a crash involving a parked lorry.

The serious crash occurred on Norwich Road in Besthorpe.

Emergency services were called around 8.30am on Wednesday to reports of a collision involving a cyclist and a parked lorry.

A spokesman for East of England Ambulance Service said: 'Multiple response vehicles including an air ambulance were dispatched and arrived on Norwich Road, Besthorpe, just before 8.30am.

'A female cyclist was taken by ambulance to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital following a cardiac arrest.'

Danny Cross, 18, of Norwich Road in Besthorpe said: 'I heard a bang. Apparently a woman went into the lorry. This was about 8.30am.

'I woke up and went outside to see what was happening.

'The cyclist was taken to hospital and there was an air ambulance there. We have had so many things around here recently, we had the floods a few weeks ago and now this.'

The road was closed between Silver Street and the roundabout at the top Spooner Row for almost three hours while emergency services dealt with the accident and drivers were advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes. It re-opened shortly before 11.10am.

The Turquoise Line 13 bus service, which runs between Attleborough and Spixworth, had also been diverted at Besthorpe because of the road closure.
