About 250 Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and their leaders created a colourful spectacle as they held their St George's Day parade in Fakenham yesterday.

There was an age span from six to early 70s as 10 groups which make up the Central Norfolk district took part in the march.

They paraded from the auction car park in Whitehorse Street into the Market Place and then to the parish church for the service in which the young people renewed their promises.

The St George's Day event was held earlier than normal due to Easter and a good crowd lined the route in glorious spring sunshine.

District commissioner Richard Green said: 'I am absolutely delighted with the turnout and they really enjoy parading.'

Parade marshall Andrew Copelin said marking St George's Day was very important.

'It is part of us making our promisees and it is great to be out and all these people seeing us.'

Fakenham mayor Janet Holdom was on the saluting base in the Market Place and said: 'It is an honour that they chose Fakenham to parade and it has been very moving. I want to say a special thanks to those people who put such a lot in to bringing these young people through and making them into the well rounded adults and also for keeping up this tradition.'

Also taking the salute was Carol Goodbody, group Scout leader for the 2nd Dereham (Toftwood) group, to mark their 50th anniversary this year.

'I am very proud and everyone looks so smart today.'The groups taking part were 1st and 2nd Dereham, Melton Magna, 1st Mattishall, Nelson Rural, 1st Swanton Morley, 1st North Elmham, 1st Beetley, Little Snoring and Fakenham Wensum.
