The long-awaited summer weather drew the crowds out in force for the fourth annual Sport in the Park event as part of the Hethersett Open Weekend on Saturday.

Shane Hull, chairman of event organisers Hethersett Olympic Legacy Committee, said more than 2,000 people had already visited the Sport in the Park event less than two hours after the start, to take part in more than 20 Olympic sports.

These activities included martial arts, football, badminton, handball and cycle speedway, all available free of charge with the aim to encourage people to have a go at different sports.

However, Mr Hull said this year more activities had been added so the event was no longer focused solely on sport, including a village fayre and fete, craft and cake stalls and a photographic competition.

Woodcote Sheltered Housing complex also held an open day to run in tandem.

Mr Hull said: “I think it will be a record. I mean last year when the open weekend took place the weather was a little bit inclement, although even last year we had record numbers of attendees, but now we have got the weather and new events, which makes a hell of a difference.”
