The 100th anniversary of the start of the first world war will be marked by red fireworks, representing poppies, during the traditional New Year's Day display above Cromer Pier.

The annual event, which attracts up to 8,000 people into the town and is in its 15th year, will start at 5pm.

Fireworks committee chairman Jim Bond said: 'This year's show will be as spectacular as in previous years. Premiere fireworks have been planning and building the show over the last few months and are hoping more than ever to produce effects that will light up the sea in a variety of colours, but this, as always, is all weather dependent.'

Donations from spectators last year raised more than £8,500, which is divided between funding the next year's display and local charities.

'Everyone's aware that budgets are still tight, but we do ask people give as generously as they can. Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone's help we couldn't continue the annual display,' Mr Bond added.

Mulled wine will be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church. Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open.

The North Norfolk Beach Runners have organised their annual One Mile Fun Run from the pier forecourt at 3pm.

It is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under-13s, 14-16- year-olds, seniors, and even fancy dress.

Registration will take place from 2.30pm on the pier forecourt for a fee of £1.

All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £2 a car for all-day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks.

Cromer Pier will be closed from 8am on New Year's Day until after the display (7pm approximately). Tides Restaurant will be open from 10am to 4pm.

For the first time there will be a wheelchair viewing area at the top of the slopes outside the Hotel de Paris.
