Ideas to boost safety measures to prevent dogs getting into a children's play area have been backed by Cromer Town Council.

Members voted in favour of writing to North Norfolk District Council suggesting fencing should be put around the town's Fearns Field playground.

It was discussed last night after councillors received two letters from residents who thought the field should be a dog free zone.

Clerk Julie Chance said a dog had bitten a seven-year-old child on the green area.

Hilary Cox said: 'This is an issue we should take very seriously.'

She added dog fouling was another issue which needed to be considered because of potential health problems as well as the need to retain dog walking areas in the town.

Deputy mayor Timothy Adams suggested dog owners could keep their pets on leads while in the field but other members were not sure how that could be enforced.

Cat Plewman said: 'The town council should support the district council to fence the children's play area.

'That would be quite a good compromise that would cover the concerns of young people playing.'
