A man used magnets to help steal bottles of whisky concealed them in a women’s swimsuit he wore under his clothing, a court has heard.

Mihaita-Lilian Dinu, 21, of Howard Street, Great Yarmouth, borrowed a car to go to a supermarket in Lowestoft.

Norwich Magistrates Court heard that once inside the store Dinu selected six bottles of Jack Daniels and used a magnet he had taken with him to remove the security tags before hiding them in his clothing.

Wayne Ablett, prosecuting, said the bottles of JD were “concealed in a female swimming costume he wore under his clothing”.

Dinu was arrested after leaving the store but initially gave police false details.

But when interviewed he admitted theft as well as giving a false name and address as he was frightened.

He also admitted driving a family member’s Ford Focus to the store which he was not insured to drive.

Dinu appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court today (Friday, December 22) when he admitted theft on December 21 as well as going equipped, driving without insurance and obstructing police.

Natalie Myers, for Dinu, said he is a man of no previous convictions who was “extremely emotional and remorseful for his actions”.

She said he had been told that magnets would be able to remove security tags so he tried it.

Miss Myers said he had intended to steal the bottles of JD, sell them and send money back to his family in Romania.

Dinu was fined £240 for going equipped, £240 for no insurance, £50 for theft with no separate penalty for obstructing police.

He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

In addition his licence was endorsed with six penalty points.
