Police are continuing to investigate the death of a 39-year-old man found unconscious in Norwich as unexplained after a post-mortem examination proved inconclusive.

Daniel Gillingham, 39, was found by officers just before 5am on Friday. He died at the scene.

A post mortem examination held yesterday following the death of the self-employed carpenter, proved inconclusive and officers are awaiting the results of further toxicology reports.

Mr Gillingham's wife Michelle, 37, who lives at Waterloo Road, Hainford, said she and their two children – Oliver, 10, and Daisy, six – were 'distraught' following the death of the 'perfect husband and father'.

She said: 'He's worked all his life. He had a good sense of humour, that's one thing the kids said – they missed how funny he was.

'He was a cheeky chappy - a proper Del Boy because his family were from the East End. He had such a creative brain and was fantastic at carpentry. He designed and built this house.'

She added: 'He had so many friends. I put something on Facebook and have had hundreds of comments from old friends - everyone has got good memories of him. The neighbours are heartbroken. It's overwhelming the amount of messages we've had.'

Mr Gillingham, who is originally from Essex, loved fishing and using the gym he had built himself at their house, and building things from wood. But he has had problems with depression in the past.

Mrs Gillingham, who is from Kent, said: 'He had his demons and did suffer but he was a perfect husband and father.

'Because of his problems everyone described me as his rock, sticking with him, but since he's gone I would say its the other way round. He's my rock.'

Mrs Gillingham said their two children had been hit particularly hard by the death of Mr Gillingham who is also missed by the rest of his family, including mother Michelle.

She said: 'His daughter was an absolute daddy's girl – she wouldn't leave him alone.

'She just doesn't get it. Oliver had a game of football at the weekend and scored. He was so pleased with it but just said 'I did that to make Dad proud'.

'They're asking who's going to take us fishing or take us camping now?'

Mrs Gillingham first met her husband while on holiday in Kos in 1996.

At the time Mr Gillingham was working in a water sports business on the beach on the holiday island.

The couple then got together and he moved back to this country, living initially in Essex before moving to Norfolk about six years ago.

They married almost three years ago at Norwich Registry Office with just their children present.

Mrs Gillingham said: 'We just went off me, him and the children, didn't tell anyone and just did it. It was lovely.

'That's how we were. As long as the four of us were doing stuff.'

A post mortem examination into Mr Gillingham's death was due to take place yesterday. As previously reported three people, two men and a woman, arrested on suspicion of the supply of a controlled drug, have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Norfolk Constabulary has referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission due to recent police contact with the deceased in accordance with standard procedure.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact DS Tom Smith at Bethel Street Police Station on 101.
