Police in Hunstanton were hunting an arsonist today, after it emerged a fire that destroyed six beach huts was started deliberately.

Today Norfolk police said the cause was definitely arson.

“Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have spotted any suspicious behaviour in the area or who may know who is responsible,” a spokesman said.

Firefighters from Hunstanton and Heacham were called to the huts, near the RNLI lifeboat station, at 5.30am on Wednesday.

They found the wooden huts engulfed by fire, which had spread to surrounding gorse and undergrowth.

Six of the huts were completely destroyed and a further two were badly damaged before firefighters could bring the flames under control.

Fire crews also cooled-off gas cylinders, to prevent them from exploding. The fire left a scene of devastation among the sand dunes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Gordon Francis, at Hunstanton SNT on 0845 456 4567.
