A group of Travellers will be evicted from the Postwick Park and Ride site in Norwich after ignoring a notice to leave last week.

The group of caravans have been at the site since July 24, Norwich Magistrates Court heard today.

Norfolk County Council applied to the court for an order after unauthorised campers had failed to leave the land on the park and ride site.

The day after the Travellers arrived the council conducted a welfare check and discovered no problems needing attention.

Two days after that the encampment was ordered to leave the land, but now a court has given the county council authority to take 'reasonable steps' to evict them.

None of the Travellers attended court despite summons being handed to them on Tuesday.

Sarah Flaxman of nplaw, prosecuting for Norfolk County Council, told the court: 'The group have been on Postwick Park and Ride since July 24.

'A welfare assessment was carried out on July 25 and there were no welfare issues.'

Ms Flaxman called Peter Daniel, Gypsy and Traveller liaison officer to give evidence.

'The welfare assessment was carried out and notice was served on Friday, July 27,' he told the court.

'That required them to leave by Monday, July 30 at 10am.

'They have not left at this moment in time. A summons was served by myself on Tuesday accompanied by police at approximately 3.45pm. Accompanied by police I entered each caravan and the occupants inside were handed summons. Also a summons was attached to nearby lampposts.

'There is an economic impact and effect to the public wanting to use the Park and Ride site.'

It it the latest group to pitch up on park and rise sites around Norwich this summer.

In June a group of travellers was evicted from Harford Park and Ride following an eviction order by Norwich Magistrates' Court.

They then moved onto land opposite Next.

KonectBus, which manages the Harford Park and Ride site, along with those at Postwick, Costessey and Thickthorn, said it planned to bolster security.

The travellers were then evicted from the land owned by developers Taylor Wimpey on the A1074 Dereham Road.
