Officers were called at 10.49am to reports of a 39-year-old man being injured.

Police said the man had a puncture wound to his body and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Witnesses described the aftermath of the attack and said the man was left with stab wounds to his head, side and backside.

Pearl Draper, 40, said: 'I looked out the window and saw him being attacked by the men.

'They were holding something to his head and when they took it away all the blood came gushing out.

'I was scared and I thought he was dead, I really did. The amount of blood coming from his head...'

Police said the injury is not believed to be serious.

Other witnesses described seeing a knife handle on the ground where the stabbing took place.

A nearby shopkeeper, who saw the aftermath, added: 'I was in the kitchen when I heard shouting from outside. I came to the front of the shop and saw a group of people run off.

'The person did not seem to know he had been hurt, the adrenaline must have been running. Then someone said you are gushing blood, then he sat down outside the [Kings Head] pub.'
