Two teenagers have been ordered to pay £250 in compensation after setting fire to 10 commercial bins at a school.

The boys - aged 14 and 15 and from the Norwich area - were given a 12-month referral order and told to pay the money after appearing at Norwich Youth Court earlier this month.

It comes after an incident of arson at Catton Grove Primary School, on Weston Road, on April 23 last year.

Ten commercial bins were set alight at the school, causing damage worth roughly £5,000 to £10,000.

At the time, headteacher Tim Lawes said the bins had been destroyed, with “a considerable amount of damage” done to the bin store and panels on the school’s bike shelter.

“Unfortunately these things happen,” he said, “but luckily they don’t happen around here very often.”

It came during a spate of arson attacks in the Mile Cross area, and 16 years after Catton Grove Middle School - where the primary now sits - was destroyed in an accidental fire.

A youth referral order - which can only be issued when a young person pleads guilty - means the person is required to attend a youth offender panel, where a contract aimed at repairing the harm that has been caused is agreed.
