Police were called this morning to reports that a JCB had attempted to steal the cash point from the side of the Post Office in Market Place in Reepham.

It is reported that the incident happened at around 3.45am on Wednesday morning and that as yet no arrests have been made.

The ATM from the side of the shop was stolen and the JCB burned out and abandoned in the middle of the road.

Firefighters from Aylsham and Reepham were despatched at 3.49am to scene to extinguish the blaze, using breathing apparatus and hose jets.

Local residents have reported hearing noises around the time of the incident which woke them up.

Police still remain on scene, along with the shop owners who are currently assessing the damage.

The Post Office is still open while investigations are carried out and has still received its morning newspaper delivery.

A similar raid was carried out at the town's HSBC bank in 2012, although the branch is now closed.
