A 92-year-old has spoken of her shock after her purse was stolen during a distraction burglary in a Morrisons supermarket.

Mary King, who lives at Hopton, near Diss, visited the Diss store on November 10 at 2.30pm and spoke to a man who was asking her for information about a mixer.

However, when she reached the till she discovered that her purse, which she kept in a zip chain bag in her trolley, had vanished. It contained £100 in cash, her Barclaycard and coupons for newspapers.

She said a man approached her in one of the aisles, picked up a box and asked her if it contained an electric mixer for making cakes. She told him the mixer was for a water filter.

During the conversation, she had turned away from her trolley to speak to the man, who was standing to her right and she advised him to speak to a shop assistant as she could not help him any further.

'The man was by my side when he was asking me these questions, but he was not at all frightening and he was nicely dressed and I did not think anything was wrong,' Mrs King said.

But when she got to the checkout and found the purse had gone, she believed the crime may have been committed during the conversation.

Police have issued a description of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident, who is described as white, aged 30-40, 5ft 9ins tall and slim.

He was wearing a dark coloured top and had a foreign accent.

Mrs King added: 'When I have got over the shock, it boils down to the fact that I have just lost £100. Nobody was hurt.'

Anyone with information should go to Diss police station.
