A police spokesman said the pursuit lasted around 10 minutes.

Alan and Angie Stray, a retired couple who live in a bungalow in Campbell Close, said they were woken up around 1am after hearing a lot of noise from outside their home.

Mrs Stray said: “I looked out the window and there was a recovery lorry and police parked further up the road. The car was left there, it was put on the transport and taken away with police escorting.”

On their Twitter page, King’s Police said four males were subsequently arrested for various motoring offences, including excess alcohol.

A police spokesman added the men are in custody and investigations are ongoing.
