An 'intelligent and articulate' chef has been jailed after being caught with 57 wraps of Class A drugs in King's Lynn.

Mehdi Daif attempted to run from police officers after he was stopped at Providence Street, near London Road, on October 2 this year.

But Norwich Crown Court heard how the 20-year-old was quickly caught and found with 33 wraps of crack cocaine and 24 wraps of heroin.

Prosecutor Chris Youell said the cocaine was between 21pc to 26pc in purity, which was 'very poor' quality.

He said the heroin was of similar standard at just 18pc to 21pc purity.

The court heard how Daif, of Wellington Street, Peterborough, was also found with a condom and two mobile phones.

Mr Youell said the court could 'probably guess' what the condom could be used for in regard to the way drugs can be hidden.

Daif was subsequently charged with two counts of intent to supply Class A drugs, which he pleaded guilty to on Thursday, November 1.

Mr Youell said Daif had no previous convictions for drug dealing, but had a dangerous driving conviction from September this year.

John Morgans, mitigating, described Daif as an 'engaging, intelligent and articulate' young man who had a future away from drugs.

He said: 'He [Daif] bitterly regrets getting involved in Class A drugs.

'He was taken advantage of and told he owed a lot more money than he did.'

The court heard how Daif got into debt through his own drug misuse, and was dealing to pay the money he owed.

Judge Andrew Shaw said he accepted there was an 'element of pressure or coercion' for Daif to sell the drugs, but added the court was getting 'a little tired' of hearing the same excuses from defendants.

He sentenced Daif, who appeared in court via videolink, to 40 months in a young offender's institution.
