Neighbours by a park where a teenager was shot last week are being invited to meet and reclaim the area for the community.
The Wensum Residents Association committee met yesterday and have devised a plan to form a Friends of West End Gardens group.
It comes one week on from a shooting at the park on Adelaide Street and West End Street in the early hours of last Wednesday.
A 19-year-old from London had been shot and was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital where he underwent surgery.
Liam Calvert, chairman of the Wensum Residents Association, said their committee held an 'impromptu' meeting on Monday evening to discuss a response to the shooting.
'I think it is fair to say there are two very different views of what is happening in our area,' he said. 'Most of our members seem to view this more as a drug problem that is not such a problem in the area unless you are involved in drugs, or there is a shooting of course.
'I have seen quite a lot of people who have not been very happy with the negative publicity that brought to the area, and we are looking to form a Friends of West End Gardens group. What we would like to do is work with the council in much the same way as the local community worked on Old Library Wood. We would come up with a strategy with the council, and they buy in because the community buys in.'
Norwich City Council workers visited the park on Tuesday to cut back the overgrowth following community concerns.
A spokesman said: 'We've been working closely with the police so we know residents have asked for bushes and hedges to be cut back since.
'That work was prioritised with crews on site today (Tuesday) and with plans for it to be completed by the end of the week. We would ordinarily carry out this kind of maintenance around September but we brought the work forward to help alleviate residents' concerns.'
Three people have been arrested in connection with the shooting and released. A 17-year-old arrested on Friday afternoon and has been released under investigation.
Two other people, aged 17 and 26, were arrested on Thursday have also been released under investigation as the enquiry continues.
Norfolk Police said investigations are ongoing into the incident with detectives pursuing a number of enquiries.
The public meeting will be held at the Fat Cat Percy pub on Adelaide Street on Wednesday, July 11 at 7.30pm
