A man in his 60s suffered serious injuries after an assault by a group of men.

The victim said up to five men assaulted him while he was walking back to his car on St Mary's Street in Bungay.

It happened between 7.30pm and 8.30pm on Thursday, September 26.

He was knocked unconscious and sustained a fractured right eye socket as well as a cut to the back of his head which needed hospital treatment.

He has now been released from hospital and police are appealing for witnesses.

The victim described one of the males as about 19 years old, 5ft8 tall, of slim build and with short blonde hair that was longer at the front and swept over his face.

The other suspects were aged between 16 to 19 and wearing casual clothes.

Bungay Town mayor Sue Collins said the attack was 'horrifying' but added: "It's an isolated incident and Bungay is a very safe town. It's a rare incident."

"It's very isolated and the police are dealing with it. We would ask people to assist them in dealing with it if they can, as we will. Our thoughts and concern are with the family."

On September 11, the town council received the green light to install long-awaited CCTV in the town centre.

After two years of planning, the council voted unanimously for its first phase of cameras to deter anti-social behaviour.

However, Mrs Collins said the area where the assault happened will not be covered until phase two.

"Phase one is only covering the centre of town but phase two, which we are about to start putting into motion, will cover St. Mary's Street.

"The whole idea of CCTV is because, where the has been incidents in the past, we can now assist the police in finding those who are responsible, but we hope it will increase the safety of the town."

Enquiries are on-going and anyone with information is asked to contact police, quoting crime reference 37/45453/19.
