A lorry driver who caused a fatal crash when he mistakenly drove on the wrong side of the road has been jailed for 32 months.

Istvan Becsei, 57, from Retszilas, Hungary, pulled out of a farm in Cambridgeshire, immediately drove on the right-hand side of the single-carriageway road and collided head on with a motorbike travelling on the correct side of the road, Cambridgeshire Police said.

Motorcyclist David Pokora, 60, of Littleport, Cambridgeshire, died at the scene on June 3.

Becsei admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for 32 months at Cambridge Crown Court on Monday. He was also disqualified from driving for 31 months.

Pc James Thorne said: “This tragic collision was a result of Becsei not paying proper attention to his driving for a relatively long period of time.

“Losing concentration while driving has the potential to prove fatal and maintaining that due care and attention is particularly important when you’re driving on a side of the road you’re not used to.”

The lorry had pulled out of a farm on to Ely Road, Littleport, and hit the motorbike on a bend just south of the junction with Brickmakers Way, also in Littleport.
