A lifeboat came to the aid of a lone sailor after his engine caught fire off Scolt Head Island, on the north Norfolk coast.

The Hunstanton RNLI said the four-metre rib fishing boat was north of the island when the fire happened this evening.

The sailor managed to put the fire out, but could not then start his outboard engine, and his VHF radio had failed.

He contacted the Humber Coastguard by mobile phone at 6.30pm.

The coastguard asked the Hunstanton RNLI's Spirit of west Norfolk lifeboat, which was on an exercise in the Wash, to help the sailor.

The lifeboat took the vessel in tow to Brancaster Harbour and moored it up, and returned to station at 8pm.
