Danny Williams, 27, of Godric Place, Norwich, is on trial at Norwich Crown Court accused of murdering his neighbour Farnaz Ali, 49, in July last year.

The court has heard the body of Ms Ali, who had 59 injuries after being attacked with a hammer, was found in the bathroom of a flat belonging to Williams on July 29 2017.

Williams, who denies murder, chose not to give evidence during the trial which started last week.

The jury of five men and seven women have been told by Judge Stephen Holt that it was for the defence to establish a defence of diminished responsibility on behalf of the defendant.

Judge Holt finished summing up the case today (Thursday, September 20) after Andrew Thompson, prosecuting, had Jonathan Goodman, defending, gave their closing speeches yesterday (Wednesday, September 19).

Before sending jurors out to consider their verdicts Judge Holt told them that it was 'over to you now'.

He told them they were under no pressure of time to come to a verdict upon which they were all agreed.

He said if any of them had heard anything about majority verdicts they must 'put all that out of your minds' because that time had not come and might not come.

He said the only verdict the court could consider at the moment was one on which 'you are all agreed on'.

The jury were sent out to begin their deliberations at 11.13am today (Thursday, September 20).

The trial continues.
