A woman was freed from the car she was driving after it flipped onto its roof.

The single vehicle crash led to delays in Lowestoft as a road near the approach to a high school was closed to traffic for more than two hours.

Emergency services - including police, the East of England Ambulance Service and two fire crews - were called out following the crash on Weston Road about 2.30pm on Tuesday, May 24.

The single vehicle crash happened not far from the Village Rise shopping area on Weston Road, and just after the turn off into Blyford Road.

It led to delays, with Weston Road closed to all traffic for more than two hours, meaning motorists trying to access the area to pick up students from the nearby Benjamin Britten Academy of Music and Maths at the end of the school day had to make alternative arrangements.

A police spokesman said it was a "single vehicle RTC", which "the fire and ambulance service attended after a car overturned.

"The female driver received treatment at the scene, with injuries not believed to be life changing," the spokesman added.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said an operations manager and an ambulance responded at 2.34pm, with "an adult woman transported to the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston for treatment.”

The crash happened around 2.30pm, with the road reopening around 5pm after the car had been recovered and an oil spill had been dealt with.

Two fire crews from Lowestoft South fire station were called just after 2.40pm, with firefighters spending almost 30 minutes at the scene.

A brigade spokesman said: "Blue Watch mobilised along with the on call crew from Lowestoft South at 2.43pm to a single vehicle road traffic collision.

"One car on roof, crews extricated one casualty."

Parents and guardians of students at Benjamin Britten Academy of Music and Maths were informed just before 3pm that there was "no access to the school" site via Blyford Road, as emergency services remained at the scene.

It meant all students had to leave via an alternative exit, to be met by family members via another area of the school site.

With the temporary closure in place, travellers using First Eastern Counties Buses were also affected as service 101 was "unable to serve Weston Road/Rumburgh Road until the road cleared."
