A man missed being best man at his friend’s wedding and had to cancel a holiday after having his jaw broken in an assault outside a Thetford nightclub, a court heard.

Norwich Crown Court was told Charles Sterling, 23, attacked his victim because he was angry after an earlier dispute at a cash machine.

Martin Ivory, prosecuting, said he fractured the man’s jaw and knocked out a tooth with a single punch as the victim queued for Ice nightclub.

Sterling, of Nunnery Drive, Thetford, admitted causing grievous bodily harm on August 26 last year and was given a 12-month jail sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered to pay £5,000 compensation.

He was also given 250 hours unpaid work.

Hugh Vass, for Sterling, said he had been drinking and over-reacted: “It’s completely out of character. He has learned his lesson.”
