A man who stole cigarettes and toiletries from Asda in Swaffham has been jailed for 60 days.

Michael Brown, 39, of no fixed abode admitted to one count of burglary following the incident in the early hours on Friday, June 1.

Police were called to the Lynn Street store at around 1.50am following an alarm activation.

A police dog unit attended the scene and led officers to a property in Orchard Place where two suspects were arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Brown was charged with burglary and remanded in police custody and appeared before Norwich Magistrates Court on Saturday, June 2.

In a police interview, Brown admitted to staying inside the store after it had closed by hiding in the bakery.

He then went on to steal cigarettes and toiletries before using a fire extinguisher to break out of the locked store which triggered the alarm.

He was sentenced to 60 days imprisonment and ordered to pay £115 victim surcharge.

A second man, aged 55, arrested in connection with the incident was released without charge and the stolen property was recovered.
