Drivers have been warned against drink and drug driving after almost 80 motorists failed roadside tests in Norfolk during a month-long crack-down.

Some 2,122 motorists were stopped by police in Norfolk and Suffolk during the month-long summer clampdown.

In June, 194 motorists provided positive breath tests, 78 in Norfolk and 116 in Suffolk. Three people in Norfolk and 23 in Suffolk failed roadside drug tests.

Chief Inspector Chris Spinks, head of roads policing in Norfolk and Suffolk, said the targeting of drug drivers had been a key focus of this year's campaign.

He said: 'This summer was the first campaign where we have used the new-drug testing kits to detect cocaine and cannabis. These kits, along with the standard breathalysers, means we are better equipped than ever to detect and take dangerous motorists off our roads.

'Twenty-six motorists tested positive for either cannabis or cocaine during the campaign and I want to get the message out there, especially to younger drivers, that if you are driving under the influence of drugs there's a good chance you will be caught.'

'Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs impairs your judgement, making your reactions slower and therefore increases the chances of being involved in a collision.'

Drink driving is one of the fatal four motoring offences alongside speeding, using a mobile phone and seatbelt offences and police in Norfolk and Suffolk work closely with partner agencies, including Think! Norfolk Road Safety Partnership and the Suffolk Roadsafe Partnership to educate drivers and improve safety.

Anyone convicted of drink driving faces losing their licence, a fine and possibly a jail term. Convictions may also continue to impact on them throughout their personal and professional lives.
