Steve Jubey has issued a £50 reward for the safe return of the much-loved feature, which was used to distinguish the cars of now retired driver Steve “Psycho” Hemmings.

Mr Jubey, of Barnwell Road, said: “I bought it some years ago at a charity auction because it was so iconic on the banger racing scene.

“I’d take my young godson to the events too, and he loved having his picture taken next to it.”

He added: “It may not be worth much - but it means a lot to me because of the memories.”

The axe and a banger racing harness - which are worth around £400 in total - were among the items stolen from a garage in Queen Elizabeth Avenue.

Police are appealing for any information about the incident, which happened between 1 October to the 14 October, to contact officers on 101.
