'A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. He was questioned by police and released on bail until March 11 while enquiries continue.'

One witness, who did not want to be named, said: 'There were two lads fighting and a load of people around them attempting to split them up. The older man had a glass in his hand and went to hit the younger lad.

'When he hit the lad the glass made quite a nasty gash on the back of his head. He was bleeding quite a lot.'

Meanwhile, a person who lives opposite, but wished to remain anonymous, said: 'I heard a little bit of commotion outside so I headed over to my window and there were two lads fighting and a load of people around them attempting to split them up.

'The elder gentleman, who was in his late 20s or early 30s, had a glass in his hand and went to hit the younger lad.

'Then they got split up for a short period of time and the young lad's brother came out and started shouting 'I'm going to kill you' and then started punching the man.

'They then carried on fighting around the side of my flat which was out of sight for me. The lad's brother got carried away, back into Wetherspoon, whilst the man had fled around the back of my flats and headed round into Queen Mother's Garden, where I'm guessing he made his escape. Then the police came five minutes after and an ambulance about half an hour after.'

A Wetherspoon spokesman said: 'We can confirm that there was an incident in the pub which ended up with a fight occurring outside the pub.

'We will assist the police in any way possible.

'We condemn the violence that occurred inside and outside the pub.'
