THREE people were injured in a two-car crash that blocked the A146 Lowestoft-Beccles road this afternoon.

The collision involving a Toyota Landcruiser and a Peugeot 306 happened at Barnby at 3.30pm and Suffolk police expected the road to remain closed until into the evening while investigations continued at the scene.

A force spokesman said the crash completely blocked the road, and initial reports suggested that the drivers of both vehicles were trapped. Firefighters, ambulance crews and police all attended.

The driver of the Peugeot - a 24-year-old man believed to be from the Halesworth area - was freed by the fire service and was taken by air ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital at Cambridge with serious leg and pelvic injuries. A husband and wife in the Toyota - believed to be in their 60s and from Lowestoft - suffered minor injuries and were taken to the James Paget University Hospital by road ambulance.

Speaking just after 5pm, the police spokesman said: 'The road will remain closed for some time while an initial investigation gets underway.'

Suffolk police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw either of the vehicles prior to the crash, to call PC Graham Newson at Halesworth Roads Policing Unit on 01986 835350.
