Swaffham Town Council and the parish councils of Narborough and Pentney announced they were backing the campaign at a meeting on April 3 in Narborough, which was called by Norfolk County Councillor Ed Colman.

Mr Colman said he had invited the A47 Alliance chairman and chair of the county council's environment, development and transport committee, Martin Wilby, to a meeting after discussions with the parish council.

'There have been several incidents near to Narborough on the A47 over recent years and I know, from speaking to residents and the Parish Council, that people are concerned about the single carriageway stretch between Swaffham and King's Lynn,' he said.

'I invited Martin to come over to pick up some knowledge from local councillors and it was also an opportunity for local parish councils and Swaffham Town Council to get behind our campaign.

'I'm delighted to say they have all backed the campaign and we will continue to work closely to make sure their local knowledge and feelings are heard.'

The 'Just Dual It!' campaign is being spearheaded by the Eastern Daily Press, Norfolk County Council and Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. A key part of the campaign is postcards of support, which will be used to put pressure on the government.

A batch of them were included in the EDP when the campaign was launched and they are also available for collection in other locations around Norfolk.

In the Narborough meeting Mr Wilby highlighted the plan to deliver thousands of the postcards to Westminster later this year.

He said: 'It's important we keep the momentum up, by signing one of our postcards and returning it you are helping to play a part in the campaign.

'I'm really pleased how far we have come, the EDP has been superb and 99pc of the people of Norfolk are behind this as well as all of our Norfolk MPs.'

At the end of March South-West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss also announced she would back plans for the whole of the A47 to be dualled. She highlighted its importance to local businesses and said it would be beneficial 'to the UK as a whole'.

How to support the campaign

People wanting to add their support to the A47 dualling campaign can still send back the Just Dual It! postcards given away with the Eastern Daily Press last month.

You can also get them from our offices in Rouen Road; County Hall in Martineau Lane; Norfolk Chamber of Commerce in Whiting Road, Norwich; Great Yarmouth Borough Council's Town Hall or West Norfolk Council's offices in King's Lynn.

However, unlike the ones given away with the paper, those postcards are not Freepost, so you would need to put a stamp on it, or fill it in and hand it back where you pick it up.

People can also tweet their support for the campaign using the hashtag #justdualit. If you include your full name and location in the tweet, messages will be transferred onto a postcard.

You can also write, outlining your experiences of using the A47 to EDP Letters, Prospect House, Rouen Road, Norwich NR1 1RE or email EDPletters@archant.co.uk
