A historic church which fell victim to lead thieves will be filled with the sound of music as part of a fundraising effort.

Roger Fry, brother of TV presenter and comedian Stephen Fry, and musical director Gavin Turner have arranged a concert to be held at Salle's St Peter and St Paul Church on July 4.

The concert, which will feature the London-based William Byrd Choir, will be held in aid of what is believed to be Stephen Fry's favourite church.

Last autumn, the 15th century church was stripped of its lead during a spate of thefts from churches across the county.

Some £200,000 has been spent on restoration work at the medieval building over the last couple of years and the stolen lead cost £26,000 to replace. It is hoped the concert will raise up to £4,000.

Mr Turner, 74, who lives at Gunton Park and is founder of the William Byrd Choir, said: 'If the church is not properly supported, we could lose a spectacular piece of architecture. It will be a very good concert and it will sound spectacular in that building.'

The music of the concert will be almost all William Byrd and Tomás Luis de Victoria.

Tickets cost between £10 and £30. To book, call the box office on 01603 873387 or email sallechurch@gmail.com

The EDP launched the Stop The Roof Raiders campaign to offer a £1,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of criminals who steal from the region's churches.
