A village held a community art day yesterday as part of a project to create a new café space with the ultimate aim of bringing the community together.

The Cringleford community art day was held at the village primary school with the aim of promoting the Cringleford Hub Community Project, which aims to bring the divided village community together by creating a café space at the school.

The art day was hosted at the site yesterday, with colourful bunting lining the entrance and walls and adults and children of all ages getting stuck in with the art project.

The project is the brainchild of Cringleford minister Rev Heather Cracknell and her team of passionate volunteers, who are working to strengthen the community in their village, turning a somewhat divided society – with the new-builds and original sections of the village segregated – into 'a welcoming, vibrant, creative community.'

Their initial aim was to create a café space in the community area of the new primary school, which will become a social drop-in centre and host to a large programme of activities to promote 'living well in Cringleford'.

Heather Cracknell, who is involved with the project, said: 'There was a lively and friendly atmosphere.'

By holding the art day, in which the children created wind chimes, wall decorations and murals for the new café, she hoped that children and adults in the community would feel like the café was their own space, seeing it decorated by their own art work.

Local mural artist Darren Smith was also involved in the community art day, painting an eye-catching tree mural that will be decorated with leaves made by the children. Mr Smith, whose daughter attends the primary school, said the community project was 'a great idea', since it allowed people to 'get creative together'.

The team in the Cringleford Hub Community Project is closely linked with the primary school and also with the Attleborough, Wymondham and Hethersett Children's Centres.

The organisation is part of the Action for Children scheme, working with families with children under the age of five. Members of the Centre, Jo Young and Leanne Heaver, said the organisation will use the community rooms adjacent to the café to host their clinics and fun activities and play centres.
