Archant

It’s almost that time of year again - time to change the clocks.

That’s right folks, prepare yourselves to lose a precious hour of sleep, as the clocks are going forward on the last Sunday of March.

Twice a year we face the possibility of being out of sync, running ahead or behind schedule as time changes with the seasons.

This month will see the clocks go forward an hour into British Summer Time (BST) at 1am on March 25.

Also known as Daylight Saving Time, BST should bring longer, hopefully sunnier days, and warmer temperatures, which will make for a welcome change after our visit from the Beast from the East last week.

Most smart devices (phones, computers, televisions) should update themselves in order to show the correct time, but others such as your car, oven and microwave will need to be adjusted manually.

BST was invented in 1907 by George Vernon Hudson who wanted to prevent people from wasting valuable hours of light during summer mornings.

Germany was the first country to adopt the plan to change clocks in 1916, with Britain following suit and making the change only a month later.

After going forward this month, the clocks will remain as they are until Sunday, October 28 when they will then go back an hour.
