Former postman Harold Smith enjoyed writing his first book so much that he has written another one, at the age of 87.

All proceeds from the sale of 'More Paws for Thought', which is a book of memories, will go to the homeless charity, the Purfleet Trust, based in King's Lynn.

Having written 'Paws for Thought' in 2006, Mr Smith was asked if there was anything he wanted do for himself while caring for his wife, Barbara, who has dementia.

He said he would like to write another book. He also did the book's illustrations.

The grandfather-of-three, who lives in Clenchwarton, said: 'I want the proceeds to go to the trust, because I don't like the idea of people being homeless and having to sleep on the streets; it's local too. I put the book together over the course of about a year.'

The previous 'Paws for Thought' contained stories he told on a BBC Radio Norfolk programme, 'Pause for Thought', which is no longer running.

The trust's chief executive Paula Hall said money from the book would help its new Purfleet Pantry project.

She added: 'I think it's incredible what Harold has done – helping people less fortunate than himself. We were all very moved by it.'

The charity works with about 80 clients a day and provides a free breakfast club. It also runs six houses where people can learn new skills to help them get back on their feet.

Priced at £5, 'More Paws for Thought' is available from the trust shop, based at the Centre Point community area in Fairstead, Lynn, and at other outlets in the town.
