Children are being invited to get creative and design a religious item of clothing for Norfolk Day.

The contest has been launched by St Peter Mancroft church in Norwich to create a design for a stole.

A stole is similar to a long scarf and is worn by a priests and deacons.

The competition is open to eight-12-year-olds and entries need to be sent in by Friday, June 8.

As part of the prize, the winning design will be turned into a stole to be worn during a special Celebrating Norfolk Service at St Peter Mancroft church on Chantry Road at 9.30pm on Friday, July 27.

The Ecumenical celebration is open to anyone and will be led by the Rt Rev Graham James, Bishop of Norwich.

Graham Kirk-Spriggs, curate at St Peter Mancroft church, said: 'This competition is a really exciting opportunity for children to put their creative hats on and think about what makes Norfolk special to them.

'As well as celebrating Norfolk Day in a unique way we plan to use the stole at other services in the future so the winner will be contributing something very special to the history of our church, and the future of Christian witness in Norfolk.

'We're also hoping to send it on tour around the county.

'At St Peter Mancroft we love to encourage creativity and excellence in the arts so we hope that this competition, with its unusual prize, inspires lots of children to take part.'

Designs have to be Norfolk themed and stole maker Sally Prendergast will turn the winning entry into the religious garment.

It will be commissioned by St Peter Mancroft church and Mr Kirk-Spriggs hopes the Norfolk Day stole will tour around county churches.

The winner will receive £30 in gift vouchers. Two runner-up prizes of £20 and £10 in gift vouchers will be awarded.

All competition entries will be on display in St Peter Mancroft church.
