A cat found abandoned in a pet carrier on a residential street in the fens has been taken in by a cat charity in Downham Market.
Cats Protection’s Downham Market Adoption Centre is looking after the black-and-white male cat, since been named Badger, after he was found on Grosvenor Road, Wisbech on October 2.
Badger was found locked in a pink and white plastic carrier with a sheet of material, a small dish of food, a silver feather boa and a note saying, free to anyone.
A cat-loving member of the public from Watlington was called to assist after a friend spotted the young cat while driving down Grosvenor Road. Badger had his head partially out of the carrier when the duo arrived to collect him.
Unsure of how long Badger had been there and concerned by the smell from the carrier, the friends allowed him to safely stretch his legs before stocking up on cat supplies and taking the abandoned cat home where he was given his own space in a spare bedroom. The affectionate cat was taken to Downham Market Adoption Centre the following morning.
Downham Market Adoption Centre deputy manager Stacey Ely said: “Badger is generally fun and quirky as he’s a young male and everyone here is besotted with him.
“He enjoys batting around a ping-pong ball but when he’s not, he enjoys having snuggles and he kneads his bedding to show he’s happy. He’s a fun little chap.”
Luckily Badger is doing really and has had no health issues despite the circumstances in which he was found.
Adoption centre manager Lindsay Tempest said: “We understand that there can be many reasons for not being able to keep a cat but leaving them to fend for themselves or trapped with no food or water is never the answer.
“Luckily Badger is well but it could have been a very different situation. We will be looking to re-home him in a few weeks when he has been micro chipped and neutered.”
