Now, a charity on The Broads is offering a day out on the water with free boating trips for cancer patients or those receiving palliative care.

The Nancy Oldfield Trust is providing the opportunity for sailing and motor boat cruises from its base at Neatishead, near Horning.

Its 'Well-being on the Water' scheme is open to anyone who has a cancer diagnosis, or is receiving palliative care.

The trips are free of charge and include a relative or carer. If patients wish to bring more members of their family, they can do so for a small donation.

Stephen Bradnock, the trust manager, said: 'The therapeutic benefits of being out on the water are well known and we hope that these trips will offer a peaceful and relaxing 'time-out' to people at a difficult period in their life.'

The trips are on offer throughout the winter and beyond. They are being funded by the trust's bursary scheme.

The charity, which was established in 1984, relies on donations from the public, as well as bequests and grants.

It provides a wide range of boating activities for disadvantaged people and those living with disabilities who might otherwise struggle to get out on the water.

Some of its boats are specially adapted to be fully accessible to accommodate mobility and other disability issues. Trips are facilitated by staff or volunteers who are trained and insured.

The trust also offers accommodation at its Neatishead headquarters and is trying to encourage greater use of its facilities during the winter months, by promoting its accommodation as an ideal location for groups involved in activities such as bird watching, walking, and cycling, as well as boating.
