Chance to name penguin chicks at Banham Zoo

Banham Zoo is hoping to raise funds for conservation projects by auctioning off the right to name three adorable penguin chicks.

Fans of the cute creatures have just under 10 days to place their best bids on auctioning website eBay before the winners are announced.

The African penguin chicks hatched at the zoo earlier this year and have recently emerged from their nest burrows.

Their chosen names will be registered with the international studbook, while the winning bidders will also get the chance to see the chicks and help their keepers feed the penguins at the zoo.

Last year, the zoo hit the headlines when it auctioned off the names of three snow leopard cubs which raised more than 1,400 for the Snow Leopard Trust.

The money raised by the penguin auction will be sent to the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) which has been hand rearing abandoned penguin chicks and releasing them back into the wild over many years.

African penguins are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with the wild population having decreased by more than 60pc over the last 30 years.
