People enjoying a stroll along a popular beach could've been forgiven for doing a double take – as about 60 Santas lined the shore.

But it was all in the name of charity as a fishing match attracted a good turnout to Lowestoft's South Beach on Saturday (December 9).

Catching hopes and dreams, the anglers were all hoping to net more than just fish, as the competition was held in aid of the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK.

The Fishing for Wishes event saw keen anglers from around the region 'in good spirits' as they aimed to become the new champion – after the winner of the two previous events in 2013 and 2015 was unable to defend his title this year.

With many of the competitors decked out in Santa outfits, some had even decorated their shelters with a festive theme for the popular biennial event for the first time.

At the Fishing for Wishes event in 2013, more than £7,700 was raised while in 2015 £9,512 was raised to help fund special treats for seriously sick children.

Phil White, event manager, said a 'great day' was had by all.

'I'm truly grateful to everyone involved and everyone who supported us – you're all winners to me,' he said.

'The whole reason behind the Santa theme and the event date is that Santa grants children's wishes at Christmas and that is exactly what we aim to do.'

Jeff Stannard was crowned as the new champion, with biggest flat fish awarded to Jamie Bale with a quality dab of 31cm. Dev Bale won the best junior title.

The overall tally raised is not yet known as sponsorship is still being collected as the final total goes to Make-A-Wish Foundation UK.
