When Dave Banks was diagnosed with cancer he wanted something positive to focus on.

So he decided to train his eyes on the sea as watchkeeper along the Norfolk coast.

Now the 69-year-old is a valued member of the team at Mundesley Coastwatch Station who are constantly on alert for the first sign of danger at sea.

With shifts usually just two hours long, the station was able to fit Mr Banks' training around his medical treatment.

Mr Banks, who works for Sainsbury's in North Walsham, has also boosted the station by £200 through the supermarket chain's Local Heroes scheme.

Staff members carrying out voluntary work can earn £5 an hour up to a maximum of £200 a year for their choosen causes.

Mundesley Coastwatch station manager Bob White said: 'We are always grateful for much needed donations enabling us to continue to deliver our vital service here in Mundesley.
