Cancer survivor Mike Crawley has overcome his second biggest challenge by conquering Mt Kilimanjaro, raising close on £7,000 for seriously-ill children.

The father-of-four from Reepham, near Norwich, arrived back safely on Monday a stone lighter and with slightly more facial hair than when he left Norfolk.

And he delivered the good news about his fundraising achievement at an open day at Quidenham Children's Hospice, a few hours later.

Mr Crawley, 53, said: “I'm a cancer survivor thanks to the skill and care of some very special people.

“When I was first diagnosed at 50, and during my treatment, I often felt sorry for myself. Later I came to realise how lucky and privileged I'd been to have lived such a full and happy life. Now, of course, I enjoy each and every day.

“Sadly, many children are not so lucky.

“Cancer and other life-limiting illnesses often strike from nowhere and can devastate the lives of children and their families. In celebration of my 'second chance' I wanted to make a difference and do what I can to help these fantastic children, their amazing friends and families and excellent carers.”

At 5,895m, Mt Kilimanjaro is one of the world's largest volcanoes and the trek started in the rainforests. The actual summit climb took about 15hours.

Simon Hempsall, fund-raising co-ordinator for East Anglia's Children's Hospices (Each) said: “Mike has been on a long and courageous journey, not only to the top of Africa's highest peak but also through his personal battle against cancer.

“As a charity dependent on 90 per cent of its funding from public donation, we are indebted to his outstanding fundraising achievement.”

Each has centres at Quidenham, near Attleborough; Ipswich, and Milton in Cambridgeshire.
